T205 B - TMA- Semester II - 2018– 2019
ANSWER ALL THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
Question 01 – 15 Marks
Read the attached case study under the title of “Zara Organizational Structure”. As you read the article, create one spray diagram to summarize the case content respecting the conventions, and techniques. It is compulsory that students submit hand drawn diagrams as opposed to computer generated ones. Photocopies of diagrams should not be accepted. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words.
Question 02 – 15 Marks
Based on what you learned in T205B concept file 04 section II “Control”, and based on the content of the article, and taking “achieving goals and objectives Zara” as your goal, draw one closed loop control model diagram to show the various inputs, and the transformation process, that can lead to reaching this goal. You need to show all the components of the control model diagram, the inputs’, processes, control (actuator, comparator, sensor), that can lead to goal achievement . It is compulsory that students submit hand drawn diagrams as opposed to computer generated ones. Photocopies of diagrams should not be accepted. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words.
Question 03 – 70 Marks
Using an essay format, and based on what you learned in T205B concept file 04 section I “Organizations are They Rational”, readings 01 and 07, section III “Structure”, section IV development, section V culture and climate, and section VI “Decision Making” and based on the ideas put forth in the attached case study:
(a) Discuss what is meant by organizational structure and highlight the role of the hierarchy, and the need for differentiation and integration within organizations; word Count 200 words (10 marks).
(b) Analyze the role of Zara’s organizational structure in shaping organizational effectiveness and performance. Justify your work based on concepts covered in T205B concept file 04 and support your answer with evidences from Zara’s case study, looking at how adopting the wrong structure can lead to failure; word Count 500 words (20 marks).
(c) Learning capacities vary from one organization to another, and some organizations fail to learn because their fundamental organizing principles operate in a way that obstructs the learning process. Discuss the obstructions to learning, and explain how an organizational structure can facilitate learning to learn at Zara; word count 450 (20 Marks).
(d) The extent of centralisation or decentralisation refers to the point of critical decision making in an organisation which reflects patterns of authority in a structure. Discuss above sentence and analyse the cycle of decision making at Zara on the basis of its structure. Assess the impact of these practices on organisatioal performance as learnt in T205B and support your answer with evidences from Zara’s case study; word count 450 (20 Marks).

Based on what you learned in T205A (T552/Diagramming), and on the content of the article, and taking “Approaches to Leadership” as your system of interest, draw a system map diagram to show all the components of such a system paying attention to the grouping and the hierarchy. The system map diagram should include all the potential subsystems which are contributing to workforce as shown in the case study. It is compulsory that students submit hand drawn diagrams as opposed to computer generated ones. Photocopies of diagrams should not be accepted. Reflect on your diagram in no more than 200 words.
Question 03- 70 Marks
Based on Starbucks Leadership Styles case study, what you learnt in T205A concept file 02, and T551 Linear Programming:
(a) Describe what is meant by Leadership, and why does it matter? (Word Count 500 words (20 % marks)).
(b) ‘Motivated and committed human resources were the key to successes at Starbucks. What strategies has Starbucks used in order to gain the motivation and commitment of its employees? With reference to appropriate theories and models, provide a reasoned discussion of how the company can ensure the levels of motivation and commitment that it needs to succeed in the future? Word Count 700 words (20 % Marks).
(c) Discuss the benefits of applying the systems approach to running an organization and assess the extent to which and how this approach is applied at Starbucks; Word Count 300 Words (20 % Marks).
(d) Discuss the factors that make some teams succeed while others not and assess whether they represent a mess or a difficulty for an organization. How does Starbucks benefit from ensuring to be an employee-focused company? Analyze the effectiveness using examples from the case Word Count 500 word (10% marks).
